EDAR study - Biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease

The EDAR (Beta amyloid oligomers in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and as marker for treatment response) project will be carried out by a consortium of 11 European companies and research institutions, coordinated by the VU Medical Centre, Amsterdam. Within this project Chimera Biotec will develop an ultrasensitive Imperacer® assay for the detection of beta amyloid oligomers.

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, which currently affects 4 million subjects in the European Union. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is expected to increase substantially within the next decades due to the aging population. Alzheimer’s disease severely affects the quality of life of patients and their relatives. It also poses a major burden to the health care system. Abnormalities in beta amyloid processing are a key feature of the disease.

The aim of this project is to investigate whether beta amyloid oligomers in cerebrospinal fluid, plasma, and serum can be used for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and whether they can be used as a biomarker of treatment response.
